OxBox, October 2009 - Interconnects, Connectors & Music Reviews

Joshua Bell SmallA couple of experiments with interconnects has led me to a discovery. The connectors at either end of the IC have a “sound”. I will explain but first, let us agree that interconnects have an effect on overall sound and that different ones can change the way a system sounds. Usually it is a slight change, but a change nonetheless. As obvious as this seems now, there was a time when I didn’t believe such a thing was really important and that paying hundreds of dollars for a pair of interconnects was outrageous. I still think that the price asked for some interconnects is outrageous…”

SuperSounds: IsoMike in Surround SACD from Kimber Kable

Iso Mike SACD“The artists featured in these two releases, consisting of 3 SACD multichannel/CD hybrid discs, comprise the Fry Street String Quartet, who came to these recording sessions with a string of awards and prizes in their young history. Winners of the Milennium Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the First Prize at the Yellow Springs Competition, and also receiving an award at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Fry Streeters have been a busy bunch. They’re currently in residence as the Faculty Quartet at Utah State’s School of the Arts…”

Anthem AVM-20 Surround Processor/PVA 7 Ampifier and Aperion Audio Home Theater Speaker System

Aperion Audio 512D

“So much for entry level. With a combined price approaching seven grand, not to mention 7.1 surround channels on tap, “small” was no longer part of the equation. Now I needed speakers. Lots of speakers, as it turned out. Ever since hearing that Edge Audio was one of the first adopters of the Diaural crossover developed by Kimber Kable I’d wanted to review their speakers. A trip to their website revealed two things: First, that they had changed their name to Aperion Audio, and second that they had packaged systems ranging up to 7.1 channels: Just what the doctor ordered…”

Kimber Select KS-3035 Speaker Cable

Kimber Select Loudspeaker cable

“In recent years more science has been applied to the design of both interconnect and speaker cables, though this has been exceeded only by the secrecy with which the science has been used. Hence, rather than a detailed description of the materials and design topography of this Select cable, we get in the brochure just a few words, followed by praise from a dealer: “All [Select] loudspeaker cables utilize our proprietary X38R core compound. This compound possesses unique acoustic damping and electrical properties….”

Kimber Silver Streak Interconnect

Kimber Silver Streak “Kimber was one of the early promoters of silver cable with their superb KCAG, which I still use in my system, but such cables have always been expensive. The Silver Streak is a hybrid cable that uses “a #19 AWG silver wire for the positive, or signal-carrying conductor, and two #19 AWG copper conductors as ground and return.” “The balanced Silver Streak has twin #19 AWG silver wires for signal and a single TCSS copper wire as ground,” according to the Kimber web site.”
