“If Africa is hot, Antartica is cool, even cold. When I saw this film on the big screen, it seemed as if they had the air conditioning turned up a little too high…Brrrrr. Both historical and natural, it looks both across and under the Antarctic ice, revealing a richness of life’s diversity even below freezing. Though the film gets a little cute when dealing with the penguins, it also offers some great shots of the stark landscape from helicopters and planes. There is great visual beauty in this film that makes one less concerned about digital artifacts, but then, the panorama is less busy than the African plain or the Brazilian rain forest.
“Kimber was one of the early promoters of silver cable with their superb KCAG, which I still use in my system, but such cables have always been expensive. The Silver Streak is a hybrid cable that uses “a #19 AWG silver wire for the positive, or signal-carrying conductor, and two #19 AWG copper conductors as ground and return.” “The balanced Silver Streak has twin #19 AWG silver wires for signal and a single TCSS copper wire as ground,” according to the Kimber web site.”
“It’s been a while since Ian Paisley, arguably the dean of Canadian speaker designers (but definitely no relation to Ulster’s rabble-rousing reverend) has introduced a breakthrough design, but here it is in the new OM-6. Described (and trademarked) as Omnipolar (Ian still regrets not registering “Bipolar”), this new speaker looks rather like a an electrostatic panel on top of a subwoofer, but it is a fully dynamic design, with double midranges and tweeters in the upper panel…”
“Those close to me (who have fathomed my innermost secrets) know that I dislike THX, which in my view simply adds distortion to the system, particularly in the surrounds, and I also dislike the reason for this so-called “decorrelation”, the mono nature of the Dolby Pro Logic surround channel. These guys (Dolby and THX) learned nothing from the research of CBS Labs, Jim Fosgate and others into matrix surround systems. Sorry, Tom Holman, I didn’t get the gospel…”
“DCM was a fairly well known speaker line in Canada a few years ago, but since Bryston ceased distribution of it, the brand has pretty much gone away. In the U.S., however, the company has remained active with a strong dealer base that starts with Circuit City. I’ve known DCM designer Steve Eberbach as a talented and creative engineer, and have owned two of his TimeFrame transmission-line models over the years…”
“A company that has generally occupied the upper end of the middle of the market, Denon is in just that territory with their new AVR-3600, which is a fully featured home theatre heart. It handles Dolby Digital in both its forms (RF-modulated from laserdisc and direct from DVD) with configurable coaxial and optical inputs, and provides Pro Logic, as well as the usual complement of dubious DSP surround modes. Has anyone ever wanted to listen to music in a gymnasium? After surviving high school?”
“Perhaps the most versatile consumer optical playback device available, the DVL-90 (along with its less expensive companion, the DVL-700) plays laserdiscs, CDs, and the new DVD format, and offers a bevy of digital outputs. As you’ll note from my Denon AVR-3600 review, there’s a certain amount of honest confusion out there in the marketplace about Dolby Digital (AC-3) inputs and outputs…”
“ATI (Amplifier Technology Inc.) is a California company that is said to have been in the amplifier business for 30 years, perhaps like Canada’s Bryston in the U.S. until recently, a well kept secret for much of that period. The ATI principals, designer Morris Kessler and partner Mike Pontelle, both come from SAE, Pontelle a former partner at that company, too. Well, now they have distribution up here, with a very specific product line: amplifiers, all identical except for the number of channels. The 1502 is a stereo amp, while the 1504 reviewed here is 4 channels…”
